It is a basic need for humans to find their way through natural and built environments.
For travellers, hikers, athletes and car drivers it is a matter of course that they can define their position using maps and satellite navigation systems (GPS). Nowadays, this problem is relatively easily to be solved in a natural environment.
However, it can be very difficult or even impossible to do so in the case when the satellite navigation does not work or when the map can't be synchronized:
+ certain urban areas
+ shopping malls
AIONAV Systems are technologically based on so called MEMS sensors (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems). Composed of gyroscopes, accelerometers, a magnetometer and ideally a barometer, such MEMS sensors are specifically called Inertial Measurement Units (IMU).
As far as the method is concerned AIONAV systems function according to the so called dead reckoning method: with each accomplished movement the measured distance and direction are calculated (double integration) and added to the last known position.
In order to preserve system accuracy as long as possible (taking into account the technically given inaccuracy), so called ZUPTs (Zero Velocity Updates) are used. AIONAV has developed and patented their own specific algorithms for the recognition and the calculation of such "standstills".
Applications: Firefighters, Military, Police and Special Forces etc.
AIONAV Systems AG has been founded in 2011 as a spin-off of the Graz University of Technology, Austria and the company is located in Bern, Switzerland.
