First Digital Radiography System for developing and emerging countries

About two thirds of the world’s population still have no access to radiology in spite of its importance for diagnosing frequent health problems such as trauma or tuberculosis.

A novel medical x-ray system has been designed by Pristem SA, based at EPFL’s Innovation Park, specifically to address this major global health issue, which will unlock access to vast yet largely untapped markets in developing and emerging countries.

The main reasons of failures for medical equipment in southern countries are:

+ developed for industrialized countries
+ too fragile
+ too complex
+ too expensive to maintain

3 patent applications have been filed for new technologies that make the digital system highly durable in these challenging contexts, while being very affordable, effective, easy and safe to use.

The extreme robustness is a major competitive advantage which will allow implementing an innovative business model to deploy the system in a sustainable and scalable way:

extended maintenance and repair services will be included in the initial purchase price.

This is a pioneering project where the combination of Swiss quality and innovation will help open new global markets; and pave the way for many more medical devices to be deployed by Pristem.
